Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast,” currently on stage at the Civic Theater in San Diego through Sunday, November 29, is the perfect holiday treat for the whole family!
You know the story. It’s the timeless classic tale of Belle, a young girl who is different from the rest, and of the Beast, the once-handsome prince who was cursed to become a monster for behaving like an unpleasant bully. After a turbulent start to their first meeting, they both find they are perfect for each other.
This story never gets old, and neither do the musical numbers of the Academy award-winning score by Alan Menken and Tim Rice, which includes my favorite songs “Be Our Guest” and “Beauty and the Beast.”
Think you’ve already seen the musical “Beauty and the Beast?” Think again.
I had watched this musical before and thought I knew what to expect. But there was something different about it this time. This year, the dialogue includes contemporary references and very funny lines. The Beast is also more lovable. During one of the moments when he could have lost his temper in a scary way, he instead turns it into a tantrum which might remind you of your toddler when he doesn’t get his way.
The costumes are beautiful and the sets imaginative and majestic, too.
